The 15th Annual Marv Byars’ Memorial Golf Tournament was played on July 10, 2015 at The Club at ArrowCreek. This year we returned to the lower Legend Course after a one year hiatus playing the upper Challenge Course. 28 teams from consulting firms, general contractors and material suppliers laced up their soft spikes to support the University of Nevada’s civil engineering students. Over 20 professional and student volunteers helped out with another successful event, witnessing possible hole in ones on the five par 3’s and the ever popular putting contest. The threat of thunderstorms appeared early with dark skies and a little rain, but by 11 AM, the clouds moved on and the sun came out for a perfect afternoon.
A huge thank-you goes out to the people who made this tournament possible: those who volunteered their valuable time, all of our generous sponsors, the companies that entered teams and of course the staff at ArrowCreek. The Marv Byars’ Tournament has raised over $110K since we began 15 years ago and the students in turn have turned the proceeds into a marketing coup for the University of Nevada. Over the past 10 years, the students have qualified for Nationals in the concrete canoe; placing first twice and never finishing lower than sixth. Those of us involved with the tournament: organizers, volunteers, sponsors and players are very proud of the student’s accomplishments and only wish them continued success. We in turn will continue to support them in every way we can.
Finally, about the golfing; first place went to Pape Machinery, CH2M Hill #2 finished second and third-place went to the YMF team. While skill is helpful in placing high in this tournament, the real advantage goes the team who buys the most putting tape. You can call it cheating, but we like to call it supporting the students, as all money raised eventually goes to the students over the next year. As for the other tournament contests: James Mack from Stantec won the putting contest, Jon Del Santo from CME won the men’s long drive and Raquel Speers from Hill International won the women’s long drive. Closest to the hole winners were Garth Oksol #2, Doug Maloy #5, Tony Dimel #8, Brian Elder #12 and Casey Solum #15.
Whether you played, sponsored, volunteered or missed out this year, please plan on joining us in support of the UNR students at the 16th Annual Marv Byars’ Memorial, scheduled for July 8, 2016, once again at the beautiful Club at ArrowCreek.
